Sandberg California - Oliver Riedel's edition

Recently, I bought a bass from Sandberg, a german brand. Their basses are known for pristine construction quality, and they offer a relic’ing service. I got very impressed with the quality and decided to take my Macro lens and make some shots. Read the post through the end if you want to know how the tone looks like! I am dividing this posting into 2 main categories: Photography and Music.

Music

First and foremost: pancakes to the belly! Second: bass tabs at 4:47. Third: Please let me know if the reflex of my lights are distractive.

Now the audio: It took me a while to get to this tone. I am using Oliver Riedel’s Sandberg bass. Although it’s an active instrument, I am using it in passive mode and doing a balance of 80% bridge 20% neck pickup, because that’s how Joe Dart bass from MusicMan kinda operates. I got a bassless song somewhere on YouTube, but I noticed it gets really loud and trebly at the end, I didn’t want to lower the overall volume, nor do any automation, so I reduced treble via EQ a bit and applied a limiter via Logic Pro X.

I am learning LOTS of bass stuff with a guy called Jayme Lewis. It’s a recent content creator I recently discovered that provides only the best of the best (and I think he is also a PhilJones bass fan) By watching his videos for just 1 week, I was able to step up my recording game and get to this tone. Please support him on Patreon to get some digital goodies! Here is the link for his YouTube channel.

Hardware:

  • Sandberg California Oliver Riedel’s edition (pictures above)
  • Phil Jones BG-400 Bass Suitcase Bass Combo Amp (300W)
  • Lewitt LCT 440 Pure (approximately 4-inch from the cabinet)
  • UAD Apollo Twin X

Software/Plug-ins:

  • Logic Pro X
  • Neve 1073
  • Hitsville EQ
  • Teletronix L2-A2

Recording:

  • The dry input come from the DI output of my PhilJones BG-400 and has a Neve 1073, Hitsville EQ, and Teletronix L2-A2 chain.
  • The wet input uses the Lewitt LCT 440 Pure with just the Teletronix L2-A2 and some heavy EQ to trim bass and treble and focus on the mid range.
  • In Logic, I have these 2 bad boys sending to a bus with a chroma reverb. I am also applying some additional bass boost.
